SVUMC Preschool
School Philosophy & Goals

Philosophy

The Spring Valley United Methodist Church Preschool provides a strong preschool education and care in a nurturing, Christian environment dedicated to guiding each child to become the unique person God created him or her to be. A young child needs to be exposed to many experiences in a loving, caring atmosphere in order to stretch outward, mature and develop a positive self image. Spring Valley United Methodist Preschool is a ministry of Spring Valley United Methodist Church.

The school is governed by the SVUMC Preschool Board, comprised of members of Spring Valley United Methodist Church.

Chapel is held weekly for children in our Three and Four year old programs. Chapel is lead by the ministers of Spring Valley on a rotating basis and all parents are welcome to attend.

Curriculum

Concepts and skills are taught through the use of learning centers and circle time. Lesson plans are created around developmentally appropriate thematic units and include the following: early literacy (reading and writing skills), creative arts (art and music), mathematics, science, social studies, large and small motor skills, and health and safety.

Program Goals

  • To provide an opportunity for children to develop an awareness of God's love as experienced through relationships with teachers, other children, and the child's family.
  • To work closely with parents to provide a support team for all students.
  • To provide developmentally appropriate classrooms, where teaching strategies are based on the knowledge of how young children learn.
  • To help children practice social skills and build friendships by helping them enter into, sustain and enhance play.
  • Spring Valley UMC Preschool is currently pursuing a new accreditation with NACCP - The National Accreditation Commission for Early Care and Education Programs. Their Web site is www.naccp.org.
  • The school is also licensed by the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services Child Care Licensing Division.
  • To foster a cooperative rather than a competitive atmosphere.
  • To help children understand their surroundings and to accept similarities and differences.
  • To help children know that school is a positive place to be, and a place where they can experience success.
  • For all children to leave our school with a positive attitude toward learning.
