Dr. Don Barnes recalls that during the summer of 1977, the ministerial staff at Spring Valley United Methodist Church felt the need for a Bible Study Class that would be all inclusive, i.e., for all ages, couples and singles, led by a knowledgeable leader (preferably a lecture-style class).
The class was formed in September 1977 with 9 members in attendance. In January 1978 the class had 27 members. In 1984 there were 107 members on the class roster. As of January 1,1998, 110 member are listed on the class router and the Beacons remain the largest class with an average attendance of 70 or more. Its members range in age from 12 years to 98 years.
Class members selected "The Beacon Class" as its name and Are Ye Able as its class song. The Class calls itself an "Old Fashioned Sunday School Class" with plenty of fellowship, hymn singing (old and new favorites), and Bible Study.
Dr. Carl Swanson (an attorney who later received a doctorate and served as a professor at North Texas University) had just joined the church and agreed to take the responsibility of serving as its teacher for 15 years through September 1992.
Dr. Guy Garrett, retired minister and missionary, taught the class from 1993 until 2003.
