Special Portions - Chancel Carvings

Our Chancel Carvings symbolize the several aspects of worship that are the focus of the worshipping community whenever it gathers in the adoration of God.

Chancel Elements

For I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, 'This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.' In the same way he took the cup also, after supper, saying, 'This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.' For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. (I Corinthians 11:23-26)

The magnificent carvings on the Communion table are the Biblical symbols of Holy Communion. The Wheat, Grapes, Chalice and Wafer remind the worshipper of the sacrifice of our Lord; the Grapes and Chalice, the symbols of his shed blood; the Weat and Wafers, the symbols of his broken body. As we receive these representative gifts, we are reminded of His Words of Institution on the last night of his ministry on earth.

Chancel Elements - Cross

For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believs in him may not perish but may have eternal life. (John 3:16)
The pulpit carving is that of an encircle cross. The cross stands as an everlasting sign of God's suffering love and plan of redemption. The circle symbolizes the eternal and sufficient nature of God's word to humankind. This is at the center of what we proclaim as Christians, and so adorns the pulpit to help us focus on what is the ground of the Word we preach.

Chancel Elements - Lamp

Thy Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. (Psalm 110:105)
On the Lectern, there is carved a Lamp. The Lamp is the symbol in both the Old and new Testaments of God's light which "lights every one" of us. From the lectern, the Bible is read, and from that Lamp of Faith comes the light of truth that enlightens and instructs God's people.
