The Longest Night Service

Even as we celebrate the birth of Christ, the church is also called to recognize and honor the grief carried by those whose relationships have been altered or lost through death or other forms of separation. We offer a Longest Night worship service to create space for those who are grieving, walking in the shadow of loss, or seeking a liturgy that speaks to their pain. The service offers a communal setting for people to acknowledge their laments, find solace, and experience God’s comforting presence. Sunday, December 21, 5:00 p.m.

Christmas Eve at SVUMC

On Christmas Eve, we welcome the Christ Child, the fulfillment of our joy, as we proclaim with the prophet Isaiah, “For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6). Emmanuel, God with us, has come to dwell with us as a tiny baby. “His authority shall grow continually, and there shall be endless peace for the throne of David and his kingdom."(Isaiah 9:7). Christ dwells with us, to live in the neighborhood of vulnerable humanity as a vulnerable child. May the light of Christ warm our hearts and light our way as we share the joy of God’s salvation wherever we go.

Lessons & Carols Service

In 1880 E. W. Benson, then Anglican Bishop of Truro, England, composed a Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, based on ancient sources, for Christmas Eve. In 1918 it was adapted for the chapel of King's College, Cambridge, by its Dean, Eric Milner–White, who also wrote The Bidding Prayer. The Blessing after The Lord's Prayer, added by Milner–White, was first included in its present form in 1930. Join us for this informal celebration on the first Sunday of Christmas, December 28!
