Celebration of Life for Jan Apthorp

Janet Lynn Apthorp was born in Austin, Texas on March 03, 1953 to Howard and Josephine Ellis. Jan grew up in Dallas, Texas, and when she moved to Richardson, Texas, she was proud that she was in the first graduating class from Berkner High School in 1972. Upon graduation, Jan attended Tyler Junior College and then transferred to Stephen F. Austin State University where she earned her degree in English and Sociology. She thought of majoring in music, as she was extremely talented in the flute, which she had played for 60 years. During that time, she acquired numerous contest medals. Some of her other accolades were first chair flute at Richardson Junior High and Berkner High School, All-region Band for two consecutive years, and earning first division at Texas solo and ensemble competitions.

Upon graduating from college, she held various positions in the legal field and fee based financial institutions, including SEC compliance and Human Resources. She attended The University of Phoenix to further her career by obtaining a Master’s Degree in Organizational Management.

Jan was active in charity work by feeding the homeless, volunteering at Habitat for Humanity, participating in the music department at church, and helping to raise funds for The Alzheimer’s Association.

Jan loved to travel with Chuck. She experienced visiting many countries in Europe, The Caribbean, South America, Scandinavia, and Russia many of which involved cruising.

She is survived by a sister, Karen and her husband Mike, many cousins, and a nephew and two nieces.

Contributions can be made to the Music Department at Spring Valley UMC, The Alzheimer’s Association, or if funds are short; give someone a smile and a hug because there is no better way to brighten up one’s life who may need the light of Christ to shine upon them.

Thank you all in advance for attending Jan’s Celebration of Life in helping to honor one of God’s true Angels!
